The 5 Steps of the SMART Reset
1. S – SCAN | Recognising tension
Learning to notice and name what is happening in body and behaviour
(breathing, muscle tension, tempo, focus, reactions).
Scan language helps players recognise tension
and often reduces it before intervention is needed.
What can be named can be adjusted earlier.
2. M – MOVE | Using movement
Targeted movement to lower stress levels
and bring the system back into motion.
Movement opens the pathway to regulation
—the switch.
3. A – ADAPT | Adjusting physiology
Adapting breathing, muscle tension, and sensory input
so the body returns to a workable level of arousal.
First the body,
then the mind
—the fuel.
4. R – REFOCUS | Directing language and attention
Simple, task-focused language and self-talk
that help redirect attention
without performance pressure or evaluation.
Not motivating.
Providing direction.
5. T – TASK | Returning to action
Re-engaging in learning, playing, or competing
while maintaining regulation.
Not perfect.
But possible.
Language does not work against tension,
but at the right moment and at the right level.
The Smart Reset teaches
what to say,
when to act,
and when to simply stay present.
